EVENT COVERAGE

If there ever was a K-Pop group that emulates the energy of Halloween, DREAMCATCHER takes the crown with their unique rock embedded sound. From cloaked robes and staff-like lightsticks, their fans, InSomnia, were ready to celebrate!

ALL ABOUT OCTOBER VIBES

With the crisp autumn air and colorful trees scattered on the ground, InSomnias all over the world came together in KBS Arena Hall in Seoul, South Korea, to watch the seven member group perform the first day of their Apocalypse: Broken Halloween concert on October 29, 2022.

As the sun set, fans opened their coffin shaped boxes to assemble their Mong Mong-ie lightsticks, which can be put together piece by piece, and currently has two variations for the top part that illuminates various lights.

NOW THE SHOW BEGINS

Inside the arena, the atmosphere was intimate and comfortable. The seating arrangement was kept small with a layout that made every fan feel seen, filling out the closest seats near the stage. The show started with a bang with their hit song “Odd Eye,” perfectly showcasing the live band and the strong energy of the group.  After another energizing performance, this time with “Scream,” members Dami, Handong, Gahyeon, Yoohyeon, SuA, Siyeon, and JiU came together for their introductions.

The songs continued in an upbeat energy starting again with “BEcause” and "Red Sun.” Don’t let the positive sounding beat of “BEcause” fool you, the concept behind it is eerie and perfect for Halloween with the marionette doll like dancing, while “Red Sun” is similar in its dark theme, as it takes on a less rock like sound, but is still edgy.

After all the high powered songs the arena lit up in blue, as the group came together for “Rainy Day,” a soulful ballad from their seventh mini-album, Apocalypse: Follow Us. For their next song, “Locked Inside A Door,” they made their way down the runway as they sang about a suffocating feeling to a funk-rock beat. They ended at the extended stage, where they engaged fully with the audience, constantly waving and sending hearts as they sang “Poison Love.”

The next two songs go hand in hand - both “MAISON” and “VISION” follow a message related to the deteriorating climate, a main theme for the last two releases by the group. “MAISON” talks about the distressing manner in which the earth is falling apart with lyrics like “Please someone fight for us.” The message in “VISION” is similar, as it too addresses the problems with our environment, but with a strong rock sound empowering the listener to join their vision of having a healthy peaceful vision.

Right before the solo stages began four members, Handong, JiU, Dami and Gahyeon talked to the audience and introduced Monster Band, their live band that played that night. Day one included three solo stages with Siyeon, Yoohyeon and SuA.

SOLO STAGES

Siyeon started it off with a beautiful stage filled with digitalized cherry blossoms and adorning a hanbok. The song she performed, “Entracing,” felt like a magical performance reminiscent of a Disney princess.

YooHyeon, clad in a glittery dress that twinkled under the golden lights, performed her solo, “For,” a whimsical number reminiscent of the Golden Age musical era.

Lastly, SuA in a black and white laced dress performed “No Dot," which had an edgy vibe, and a dark theme about endless obsession surrounded by flashing red lights.

A THROWBACK FOR THE BOOKS

Following the solo stages DREAMCATCHER went back in time, before they were the seven member group we know today. They performed “Love Shake” in preppy pastels, a song released in 2014, when five members of the group made up MINX, showcasing a bubbly cute pop song that greatly contrasts with the concepts embodied by the group today. After another Halloween VCR, the members came together to perform “Whistle” in red and black camouflage outfits that set the scene for the rest of the concert.

In another ment, the group joked around with each other, and challenged one another by dancing. The members were lively and engaging in a way that felt like you had been invited into a group of friends who had known each other forever, but were ready to include you in all future adventures.

They brought back the spirit by performing “Wind Blows,” a fun electric song on the extended stage with skillfully choreographed dances. They also kept the liveliness up with “BOCA,” which incorporated flags within the choreography giving it an edgy rock-pop vibe.

Similar to the live band introductions at the beginning of the concert, each dancer had their name broadcasted on the screen and were given a moment to showcase their wonderful skills, while the members hyped them up.

Throughout the concert there were VCRs (Pre-recorded Videos) that showed the groups Halloween outfits this year. Gahyeon was Elsa from Frozen, Siyeon was Eleven from Stranger Things, SuA was Scarlet Witch from Marvel, Yoohyeon as Captain Hook from Peter Pan, Dami was a Nine Tailed Fox, Handong was Tomie from Junki Ito, and lastly, JiU was Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle

The group goes on to perform “Break The Wall,” which was filled with action, and showcased the group's vocals with the ballad reminiscent of a battle. “Starlight,” was a pop song filled with hope, while “Some Love,” offered a positive future outlook.

“Fairytale” and “Silent Night” were performed back to back for the encore, with members returning to the stage in sweaters that provided more of laid back vibes. The group then gathered together along with their dancers and took photos with the audience before launching into a fun filled last song. They performed their fan dedicated song, “Over The Sky,” and threw candy to the crowd, running up and down the stage.

CONCLUSION

Just like that three hours went by in a blur, filled with a concert that surpassed my expectations. It seems as though the group could have performed every song in their discography, and it somehow would have still worked within the Halloween theme. They create music that is dark, enticing, and captivating all with a rock feel.

Unlike any other concert I’ve been to, after the group said their goodbyes, the screen filled with a credits roll of the names of everyone who helped - showing that it took a small village to bring together the performance Insomnias saw that day.
